4 Denim Trends R29 Editors Are Wearing This Winter

As eager as we are for spring days, winter is, unfortunately, still here. But on the bright side, that means we can indulge in all the styling perks the chillier season allows: layering away to our heart’s content, stomping around in our chunkiest (read: well insulated) boots, and, of course, experimenting with denim in all its many shapes and silhouettes. Because while the classic, sturdy fabric is a year-round closet essential, it does lend itself particularly well to helping us stay warm as it keeps us looking cool.

Of course, you could always reach for your tried-and-true, classic skinny jean this winter — but there’s also a number of fresh denim trends worth trying this season, from faux-sherpa denim jackets to 2020’s most in-demand jean cut to the new silhouette that’s bound to take over the mom jean’s throne. Brought to you by Macy’s, ahead are some of the season’s need-to-know denim trends, as styled by two Refinery29 editors. On second thought, winter seems a lot more bearable.

The Faux-Sherpa Denim Jacket

Denim jackets have been around since denim itself has been in existence, but this season, the wardrobe staple gets a winter update with cozy sherpa. The most common iteration of this trend is a jean jacket with a faux-fur collar and fuzzy inner lining. But you can certainly take it a step further and go for one with faux fur on the outside, as seen here. Cozy and casual, this has everyday jacket energy.

The Cropped Denim Jacket

Levi’s has taken its classic Trucker Denim Jacket and cropped it for a 2020 update. Make it a matching set with a pair of white jeans, or layer it over literally any outfit, like this tie-dye skirt. High chance it’ll still look good. The cropped cut is ultra-flattering, while the achromatism offers versatility, so you can really go as mild or wild as you’d like.

Mixed Denim-On-Denim

Denim-on-denim isn’t anything new, but perhaps the freshest take on this trend is mixing up the shades. There are way too many denim washes out there for you not to be mixing them. When choosing which denim separates to combine, consider the silhouettes. Case in point: a loose-fitting top with a more tapered jean for a cool and modern look. You may be mixing washes, but balance is key.

The Dad Jean

Tired: mom jeans. Wired: dad jeans. Sorry momma — the new denim trend is the slouchy ‘n’ loose dad jean. The mom jean may be all about the tapered, butt-flattering fit, but the dad jean is all about the relaxed, sometimes even (gasp) low-rise silhouette. A pair of chunky, lug-soled boots or any other night-out-worthy add-on can help the jean feel less outdated and more chic.
